Brand Story

Quiksilver rides the wave of youth appeal, catering to the young and athletic with surfwear, snowboardwear, sportswear, and swimwear sold under such names as Quiksilver, Roxy, Raisins, Hawk, Radio Fiji, and Gnu. Quiksilver owns the DC brand of footwear and apparel for young men and juniors. They sell their products worldwide in specialty and department stores such as Nordstrom, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Macy's.

Quiksilver came to us and asked us participate in their design auditions (that’s what we call ‘em, anyway, because that’s what they are) and hopefully become a contributor to the massive company’s line. 

We wanted to give an honest attempt to see if we could adapt our thinking around their existing brand-point-of-view, so we accepted the challenge. With “Quik” already  a leader in their industry, our task could be summed-up by a simple question: How do we improve on stuff that’s already cool?

Our solution was to just bomb them with options and feel-out the direction. The request was for a 5-6 design submission, so we sent 15. We knew the trending patterns of the time had hints of motocross style-points woven-in, and moto is very much a part of our DNA. We knew we stood on stable ground to have a few make the cut. 

Quiksilver called and said “congratulations, this is the first time we are buying all of everything anyone has ever submitted!” Yes, they selected all 15! We’ve had a relationship ever since; designing brand assets beyond just tees and caps - we’ve also been involved in the development of wetsuit product logos, corporate Quiksilver word-marks, original fonts, and even some off-the-wall boxer-shorts. 

Rising to the design challenges of Quiksilver has been an incredibly effective way to stay on-trend and keep our finger on the pulse in a leading-edge industry.
